Terms of Service
These terms govern your use of Tangent for iPad and its Axel STEM helper. They supplement Apple's Standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement and do not replace rights that consumer law gives you.
1 Agreement to these terms
By downloading, installing, or using Tangent, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use the app. If you use Tangent for a school, employer, or other organisation, you confirm that you are authorised to accept these terms for that organisation where applicable.
Tangent is currently operated by the independent developer identified on the app's App Store product page. Questions and claims may be submitted through Tangent's App Store support contact.
2 App Store licence
Tangent is licensed, not sold. Unless Tangent provides a valid custom end-user licence through the App Store, Apple's Standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement governs your licence to install and use the app. These Terms govern Tangent's own services, content, AI feature, and acceptable use in addition to that licence.
Your use must also follow the Apple Media Services Terms and any usage rules that apply to your device, App Store account, Family Sharing, or volume purchase.
3 Who may use Tangent
Tangent is intended for students and other learners. If you are not legally able to agree to these terms on your own, a parent, guardian, school, or other authorised adult must review and accept them for you where the law permits. Schools and adults responsible for a child should decide whether the app and its AI feature are appropriate for that child.
4 The service
Tangent provides a library for whiteboards, documents, presentations, folders, handwriting, typed text, attachments, citations, and version history, with iCloud sync when available. The app may also offer contextual actions and the Axel STEM helper.
Features may change as Tangent is improved. Tangent may add, remove, suspend, or limit a feature when reasonably necessary for security, legal compliance, service reliability, or product development. Tangent will not remove statutory rights or any paid entitlement without the remedy required by applicable law.
5 Axel and AI generated content
Axel uses artificial intelligence to identify possible STEM questions, produce concise answers, and explain reasoning. When Offer STEM Help is on, the app may send a cropped snapshot around recent writing after you pause, or selected imported pages, to determine whether to offer help. You can turn this feature off in the note menu.
- AI output can be incomplete, inaccurate, outdated, or misleading. Check the working, units, sources, and final answer before relying on it.
- Axel is an educational aid, not a teacher, examiner, professional adviser, or emergency service. Do not use it for high-stakes decisions.
- You are responsible for following school, university, exam-board, workplace, and assessment rules. Do not use Tangent to cheat, misrepresent authorship, or bypass a rule that applies to you.
- Do not include unnecessary personal, confidential, or sensitive information in material that Axel may process.
6 Your content
You keep ownership of the notes, drawings, documents, presentations, attachments, prompts, and other material you create or import into Tangent. You must have the rights needed to use that material.
You give Tangent a limited, non-exclusive licence to process content only as needed to provide the features you request, operate Axel, protect the service, comply with law, and enforce these terms. This licence ends when the relevant content is no longer needed for those purposes, subject to provider retention and legal obligations described in the Privacy Policy.
7 Acceptable use
You must not use Tangent or Axel to:
- Break the law, infringe intellectual property or privacy rights, or encourage harm.
- Upload malware, probe or disrupt the service, evade usage limits, or gain unauthorised access.
- Generate or distribute exploitative, abusive, threatening, or illegal material.
- Impersonate another person, misstate the source of work, or submit AI output as your own where that is prohibited.
- Reverse engineer or extract the app's source code except to the extent the law expressly permits.
- Resell, sublicense, or make the service available as a competing hosted product without written permission.
8 Storage and iCloud sync
Tangent saves your library on your device and syncs it to your private iCloud storage when iCloud is available. Sync may be delayed by network conditions, account availability, or iCloud storage limits. Deleting content in Tangent can remove it from your other devices after sync. Deleting the app removes the local copy but may leave content in iCloud. Sync is not a separate backup or a guarantee of recovery from accidental deletion; keep any additional backups you need.
9 Third party services
Tangent relies on Apple for app distribution and device services, Microsoft Azure for Tangent's service infrastructure, and Anthropic for Axel's AI processing. Their services are governed by their own terms and privacy commitments. Tangent is responsible for its app and its relationship with you; Apple, Microsoft, and Anthropic are not responsible for promises made by Tangent unless their own terms say otherwise.
10 Fees and purchases
Any price, subscription period, free trial, tax, renewal term, or refund right will be shown through the App Store before purchase. Apple handles App Store billing and refunds under its terms and applicable law. Tangent will not charge you outside the purchase flow you approve.
11 Intellectual property
Tangent, Axel, the app interface, software, artwork, and documentation are owned by Tangent or its licensors and are protected by intellectual property laws. These terms do not transfer that ownership to you. Open-source components remain governed by their own licences.
12 Maintenance support and availability
Tangent will use reasonable care to operate and maintain the app, but no online feature is guaranteed to be uninterrupted or error-free. Internet access, compatible hardware, and a supported version of iPadOS may be required. Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for Tangent.
13 Warranties
Nothing in these terms excludes a warranty, remedy, or consumer right that the law does not allow Tangent to exclude. Subject to those rights, Tangent is provided as available. Tangent does not promise that every feature or AI response will be accurate, complete, suitable for a particular course, compatible with every file, or available at all times.
If the app fails to conform to an applicable warranty, you may notify Apple and Apple may refund the purchase price, if any, as provided by Apple's terms. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Apple has no other warranty obligation for Tangent.
14 Liability
Tangent does not limit liability where doing so would be unlawful, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, or breach of mandatory consumer rights. Otherwise, Tangent is not responsible for indirect or unforeseeable loss, loss caused by misuse, loss of content that you could reasonably have backed up, or decisions made without checking AI output.
Where the law allows a financial cap, Tangent's total liability arising from the app will not exceed the greater of the amount you paid for Tangent during the twelve months before the event giving rise to the claim or GBP 100. This cap does not apply where prohibited by law.
15 Suspension and termination
You may stop using Tangent at any time. Tangent may suspend online features or terminate access if you materially breach these terms, misuse the service, create security or legal risk, or fail to pay an amount lawfully due. Where practical and appropriate, Tangent will give notice and a reasonable opportunity to fix the issue. Sections that by their nature should continue after termination will survive.
16 Legal compliance
You confirm that you are not prohibited from using the app under applicable export-control or sanctions laws, including because you are located in a country subject to a relevant government embargo or appear on a prohibited or restricted-party list. You must comply with applicable third-party terms, including your network provider's terms.
17 Apple
These terms are between you and Tangent, not Apple. Tangent, not Apple, is responsible for the app, its content, maintenance, support, warranties, product claims, legal compliance, and intellectual property claims. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you to the extent they relate to Apple's required App Store licence conditions.
18 Disputes and governing law
Contact Tangent through the App Store support link first so there is an opportunity to resolve the issue informally. The laws and courts that apply will be those required by your place of residence and any mandatory consumer-protection rules. If the law permits the parties to choose, the laws of England and Wales apply and the courts of England and Wales have non-exclusive jurisdiction.
19 Changes to these terms
Tangent may update these terms to reflect changes to the app, providers, security, or law. Material changes will be identified by a new effective date and, where appropriate, an in-app or App Store notice. If a change requires consent, it will not apply until that consent is obtained. Continued use after any other change takes effect means you accept the updated terms.
20 Contact
Visit Tangent Support for questions, complaints, support, or claims.
Before a public release that relies on these terms as a custom EULA, Tangent should add the operator's full legal name, postal address, email address, and telephone number as required by Apple's custom EULA rules.
